Claude Smart Reports show Enterprise admins what their team uses Claude for and what it costs. What they include, the 10 free reports, limits and privacy rules.

Companies are paying a lot for AI seats, and many of them cannot answer a simple question: what is the team actually doing with it? Claude Smart Reports are Anthropic’s answer. The feature became generally available for Claude Enterprise on October 28, 2026.

If your boss just mentioned "smart reports" in a meeting, or you saw the headline and wondered whether Claude is now watching your chats, this page explains what the reports contain, who can run them, what they cost, and what they are not allowed to be used for.

**TL;DR:** Claude Smart Reports are an admin tool in Claude Enterprise. An admin picks a team, a date range of up to 28 days and the products to cover, and Claude reads a sample of that team’s transcripts, then groups the work into workstreams with spend, deliverables, friction points and recommendations. Each organization gets up to 10 reports a month at no charge, the feature is off until an owner turns it on, and names are hidden by default. Anthropic says the reports are not for judging individual performance.

## What are Claude Smart Reports?

A Smart Report is a written summary of how a team uses Claude, made by Claude itself. Instead of a dashboard full of message counts, it tries to answer the questions a manager cares about: what kinds of work is Claude helping with, what did that work produce, how much did it cost, and where did people get stuck.

Anthropic announced Smart Reports on October 28, 2026, together with two other Claude Enterprise tools: in-app surveys and pooled group budgets. All three are generally available on Enterprise plans. Coverage the next day framed the launch as Anthropic responding to doubts about whether company AI spending pays off.

## How do Claude Smart Reports work?

The setup is short. According to Anthropic and its help documentation as reported by Unite.AI:

- **Turn it on.** The feature is off by default. A Primary Owner or Owner of the organization has to enable it.

- **Pick the scope.** Choose a team, a date range within the last 28 days, and the products: chat, Claude Code, Cowork, or chat and Cowork together.

- **Wait.** Claude samples the team’s transcripts, sorts them into workstreams and output types, and attaches list-price spend. A report usually takes a few hours.

- **Read and share.** The finished report can be shared as a Claude artifact or downloaded as HTML.

Owners can also let team leads who are not admins run reports for their own groups. Admins can ask custom questions, for example about model usage or cost, and save them as templates for next month.

## What is in a Smart Report?

| Section | What it shows |
| --- | --- |
| Workstreams | The main kinds of work the team uses Claude for, grouped automatically |
| Deliverables | What that work produced, by output type |
| Spend | Cost per workstream and cost per session, at list price, plus the most costly sessions |
| Friction | Where people got stuck, such as a missing connector or a failed tool call |
| Recommendations | One list of fixes, like recurring workflows to turn into shared skills and rules to add to a code repository |

One practical touch: an admin with billing permission can raise a user’s spend limit straight from the report, so a heavy user doing valuable work is not cut off mid-month.

## Are Claude Smart Reports free?

Each organization can run up to 10 Smart Reports per month at no extra charge, according to the help documentation cited in coverage. You still need a Claude Enterprise plan, which is a paid business contract, so the feature is not available on Free, Pro, Max or Team plans as of launch.

## Can my boss read my Claude chats with Smart Reports?

This is the question most employees will ask, so here are the rules Anthropic has published:

- **Names are hidden by default.** Attribution to individual users is off, and every time an admin reveals a name, that action is logged.

- **Not for performance reviews.** Anthropic says the reports are not designed for evaluating individual performance or making employment decisions.

- **Off-limits topics.** Custom questions cannot target protected characteristics, health, union activity, harassment, political or religious views, or personal life. Sessions flagged for those topics only feed aggregate numbers.

Honest caveat: the report is built by Claude reading a sample of real work transcripts. Your company could already see usage data, but this summary is more detailed than a message count, so it is worth knowing it exists.

## Who cannot use Smart Reports?

Organizations that use customer-managed encryption keys (CMEK), a HIPAA configuration or a hybrid deployment cannot use Smart Reports. Organizations with zero data retention for Claude Code get reports that cover chat and Cowork only.

## Smart Reports vs surveys vs pooled budgets

The three tools launched together answer three different questions:

| Tool | Question it answers | Key details |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Smart Reports | What is the team doing with Claude, and what does it cost? | Up to 28 days, 10 free per month, names hidden by default |
| In-app surveys | Do people think it is worth it? | Four default questions, such as the most valuable recent task and what would break without Claude; short card after a reply; CSV export |
| Pooled group budgets | How do we stop heavy users hitting limits early? | One shared monthly pool on top of each person’s limit; email alerts at 50%, 75%, 95% and 100% |

Together they show a shift in the AI business. The first year was about buying seats. Now buyers want proof that the seats do something, and vendors are building the receipts into the product.

## What this means for you

If you run a team on Claude Enterprise, Smart Reports are a cheap way to find out which workflows are worth turning into shared [skills](https://whatisagenticai.net/blog/what-are-gemini-skills/) and which ones waste tokens. Ten free reports a month is enough to check every team once.

If you are one person, the lesson is the same at a smaller scale: AI pays off when it finishes a piece of work, not when it chats. That is the idea behind [agentic AI](https://whatisagenticai.net/what-is-agentic-ai/). **Agentic AI** gives you a team of up to four expert agents on iPhone and iPad. You describe the task, the agents plan it and check each other’s work, and you get a finished result. There is no account, and the first 3 tasks are free.
