1Password for Agents, launched October 22, 2026, lets AI agents like Muse and Grok Bot sign in for you without seeing your password. How it works and who gets it.

1Password for Agents is the new feature from the password manager 1Password that lets an AI agent log in to a website for you without ever seeing your password. It launched on October 22, 2026, and it answers a question a lot of people have been quietly asking: if an agent is going to book my dinner or buy a gift, how does it get into my accounts without me pasting my password into a chat box?

Below is what it is, how one sign-in actually works, which agents get it first, what it costs, and what it still does not protect you from.

**TL;DR:** 1Password for Agents (also written "1Password for AI agents") is a platform from 1Password, announced October 22, 2026. When an AI agent hits a sign-in page, it asks 1Password for the login, you approve on your own device, and 1Password types the password straight into the site, so the agent never sees it. Meta’s Muse and SpaceXSI’s Grok Bot are rolling out first, with Claude Duet, ChatGPT Work and OpenAI dots listed as coming soon. It is included at no extra cost on 1Password Individual and Family accounts.

## What is 1Password for Agents?

It is a way to let personal AI agents use the logins stored in your 1Password vault without handing those logins over. 1Password calls it a "trust layer" for personal agents. The company announced it from its Toronto headquarters on Thursday, October 22, 2026.

The problem it solves is simple. An agent that does real errands, like reserving a table or checking an order, has to sign in to sites. Until now the usual options were to give the agent your password, or to sign in yourself and hand it a logged-in browser. Both put your password, or a whole session, in the agent’s hands. 1Password’s chief product officer Aashish Tripathi summed up the old approach: "hand over a credential and hope for the best."

## How does 1Password for Agents work?

According to 1Password’s announcement and blog post, one sign-in goes like this:

- The agent reaches a sign-in form and identifies itself to 1Password with its own digital key.

- 1Password shows you which agent wants which login, and why.

- You approve or decline on your own device.

- If you approve, 1Password fills the username, password and one-time code directly into the site. The agent never receives them.

- The agent carries on with the task. Access is granted per session, limited to the item you approved, and does not carry over to the next task.

9to5Google adds that once the site accepts the login, 1Password removes the credential from the agent’s reach, and the rest of your vault stays closed to it. You can disconnect an agent at any time.

| Way an agent signs in | Does the agent see your password? | Who approves? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Paste your password into the chat | Yes, and it may be stored in logs | Nobody after that |
| Sign in yourself, then hand over the browser | No, but it gets the full logged-in session | You, once |
| 1Password for Agents | No, the password is filled in by 1Password | You, for each login and session |
| x401 protocol (different job) | Not about passwords: it proves the human behind an agent to a website | You, per transaction |

## Which AI agents work with 1Password for Agents?

This is where the headlines and the fine print differ. The press release names a long list of partners. 1Password’s own blog post says what is live:

| Status (as of October 22, 2026) | Agents |
| --- | --- |
| Rolling out over the coming days | Muse (Meta), Grok Bot (SpaceXSI) |
| Coming soon | Claude Duet (Anthropic), ChatGPT Work and dots (OpenAI), Townie from Town (web and iOS) |
| Also listed as coming soon | Browserbase, Browser Use, Dana, Instinct, Kernel, Perplexity, Ramp, Tomo, Wajo |

That matches what we reported for Claude Duet the day before: Anthropic listed 1Password sign-ins as "coming soon," not live. 9to5Google also describes launch support as limited to Muse and Grok Bot for now. If your agent is not on the list, 1Password has a waitlist.

## Is 1Password for Agents free?

It costs nothing extra, but you need a paid 1Password plan. 1Password says it is included at no additional cost with Individual and Family accounts on 1Password.com. Accounts on 1Password.eu and 1Password.ca are not supported yet. Business plans are not mentioned in the launch post. The agents themselves may have their own subscriptions.

One more limit: only items in your 1Password vault work. Passwords saved in your browser or typed into notes cannot be used by agents.

## 1Password for Agents vs 1Password for Claude

This is not 1Password’s first agent feature. In July 2026 it released 1Password for Claude, an extension that lets Claude sign in to websites on a Mac using vault logins, without seeing them. PCWorld describes the new platform as building on that work and opening it up to many personal agents, including ones that run in the cloud rather than on your desktop.

The launch landed on a big day for the company. 1Password also said its annual recurring revenue passed $500 million, with developer and AI security tools driving faster growth, as WSJ and Quartz reported.

## Is it safe to let an AI agent log in for you?

It is safer than pasting your password into a chat, because the agent never holds the secret and you approve each login. But it is not a full safety net. Once an agent is signed in, it can still act inside that account. Engadget points out that agents still make mistakes, like ordering the wrong product or booking the wrong trip, and some purchases cannot be undone. Our rule of thumb: approve logins only for the task you asked for, and keep money moves under your own thumb. We cover more of this in [our explainer on NVIDIA OpenShell](https://whatisagenticai.net/blog/what-is-nvidia-openshell/), where 1Password is also a security partner.

## What this means for you

Agents are moving from chat windows into your real accounts, and the industry is now building the locks for that door: x401 checks the human, OpenShell fences in the agent, and 1Password for Agents keeps the password out of the model. That is good news, but it also means agent setups are getting more complicated, with waitlists, partner lists and per-agent permissions.

Plenty of useful agent work needs no login at all: drafting an email, planning a week, researching a purchase, studying for a test. That is where **Agentic AI** fits. It gives you a team of expert agents on iPhone and iPad, up to 4 working on one task, with no account and no login. You get 3 free tasks to try it, and you never hand it a password.
