## What is Canva Craft?

Canva Craft (sometimes written "Canva Craft AI" or just "Craft") is a text-to-image model made by Canva’s own research team. You type what you want, and it draws it. The difference from most image models is what it learned from. Canva says Craft was trained on human-designed templates from its library: posters, social posts, presentations, infographics, menus and layouts with lots of text, rather than on photos.

That choice shows in the goal. Canva says Craft aims for accurate object details, readable text inside the image, and precise edits that change one part of a picture without touching the rest. Those are the things that usually go wrong when you ask an AI for a flyer instead of a pretty landscape.

Researchers from Leonardo.ai, the image startup Canva bought in 2024, helped build it, according to TechCrunch.

## How does Canva Craft work?

Craft works in two steps, which is a bit like how a human designer works:

- **Plan.** It reads your prompt and makes a layout plan: where each object goes, how big things are compared to each other, what should stand out most, and what text should appear.

- **Render.** A second stage draws the final image from that plan.

Because it plans first, a prompt like "spring sale poster, 30% off, coffee cup on the left" has a better chance of putting the words and the cup where you asked. After that, Canva Magic, its image-to-design tool, can turn the result into a layered design with separate parts you can move and edit.

## Is Canva Craft free?

Canva says Craft is available to all Canva users in Dream Lab, which includes people on the free plan. Canva has not published a separate price for Craft, and it has not said how many Craft images each plan gets. Canva’s AI tools usually come with usage limits that depend on your plan, so expect a free account to hit a cap sooner than a paid one. For the API, pricing and rate limits were not reported at launch.

## How to try Canva Craft

- Open Canva on the web or in the app and sign in.

- Open **Dream Lab**. If you do not see it right away, type "Dream Lab" into Canva’s search.

- Pick an aspect ratio, generate, then use Canva Magic to turn the result into an editable design if you want to tweak it.

Tip: because Craft was trained on templates, it responds well to design words like "headline at the top," "three bullet points" or "logo bottom right."

## Canva Craft vs. the old Dream Lab models

Dream Lab launched in 2024 on Leonardo.ai’s Phoenix technology, and Canva has also used outside image models. Craft is the first one Canva built from scratch for itself. Canva gives three reasons for the switch: lower costs than paying other companies for API calls, more control over quality, and more control over speed. For users, the practical change is better text and layout inside images, at least on paper. No independent side-by-side test has been published yet, and the DesignArena ranking comes from Canva.

It is also Canva’s second model of its own. In October 2025 it released a design model that makes editable, layered designs. Craft fills the other half: single images.
