OpenAI on Google Cloud: What the New Deal Means

OpenAI on Google Cloud, explained: GPT models are coming to Model Garden, Antigravity and Gemini Agent. What was announced Oct 21, 2026, when, and what is unknown.

OpenAI and Google have competed hard for years. ChatGPT against Gemini. Codex against Antigravity. So the news on October 21, 2026 surprised a lot of people: OpenAI’s models are coming to Google Cloud.

If you searched "OpenAI Google Cloud" and want the short version, this page covers what was actually announced, which Google products are involved, when it happens, and the parts nobody has confirmed yet.

TL;DR: On October 21, 2026, OpenAI said Google Cloud customers will be able to buy OpenAI frontier models through Google’s Model Garden, billed through the Google Cloud Marketplace, "in the coming weeks." OpenAI models are also coming "soon" to Google Antigravity, Google’s coding tool, and to Gemini Agent. Neither company has said which GPT models are included or what they will cost. With this deal, OpenAI models will be sold on all three big US clouds: Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud.

What did OpenAI and Google announce?

OpenAI published a post titled "OpenAI models on Google Cloud" on October 21. The core of it is simple. Businesses that run on Google Cloud will be able to pick OpenAI’s models from the same menu where they already find Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude and open models. That menu is called Model Garden.

The payment part matters more than it sounds. Purchases go through the Google Cloud Marketplace. Big companies often promise to spend a set amount with Google each year. Under this deal, they can use that committed money on OpenAI models, instead of signing a separate contract with OpenAI.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said the company is focused on giving customers "a broad selection of models, including those from OpenAI," according to 9to5Google.

Where will OpenAI models show up at Google?

Google productWhat it isTiming given
Model Garden (Google Cloud)Google Cloud’s catalog of AI models for businesses and developers"In the coming weeks"
Google Cloud MarketplaceWhere the purchase and billing happenSame as Model Garden
Google AntigravityGoogle’s agent-first coding app, launched in November 2025"Soon"
Gemini AgentGoogle’s agent that carries out multi-step tasks"Soon"

So as of today, you cannot use a GPT model inside Google Cloud yet. This is an announced plan with a short timeline, not a live launch.

Which GPT models are coming to Google Cloud?

That is not confirmed. OpenAI’s post talks about its "frontier models" without naming them. 9to5Google noted that OpenAI and Google have not said which GPT models are included. It guessed that the current flagships, GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol, are likely candidates, but that is a reasonable guess, not an announcement.

Pricing is also unannounced. We will update this page when Google lists the models and rates in Model Garden.

One thing to avoid mixing up: Google already offered OpenAI’s free open-weight models, gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b, on Vertex AI and in Antigravity. Those are downloadable models anyone can host. The new deal is about OpenAI’s paid frontier models, the ones normally sold only through OpenAI and its cloud partners.

Why is OpenAI selling through Google now?

For years Microsoft had an exclusive license to OpenAI’s models. If a company wanted GPT models from a big cloud provider, that meant Azure. That changed in late April 2026, when Microsoft and OpenAI revised their deal. Microsoft stayed OpenAI’s primary cloud partner, but its license became non-exclusive.

Amazon moved first. About a day after the change, AWS announced OpenAI models, Codex and OpenAI-powered managed agents on Amazon Bedrock as limited previews. Google is the third. As CNBC put it, this expands OpenAI further beyond Microsoft, and it puts OpenAI’s models on all three major US clouds.

For OpenAI, it means more places to sell. For Google, it means business customers do not have to leave Google Cloud to use GPT models. Google still makes money on the sale, even when the model is a rival’s.

What does this mean for Antigravity users?

Antigravity already lets you switch between Google’s Gemini models and Anthropic’s Claude models. Adding GPT models makes it a coding app where the three biggest model families sit side by side. If one model gets stuck on a bug, you could hand the same task to another without leaving the app. We covered Google’s newest model in that app in What is Gemini 4 Argon?

Google has not said which Antigravity plans will get GPT models, or whether they will count against the same usage limits.

What this means for you

If you are not running a company on Google Cloud, this deal will not change your day directly. But it shows where AI is heading. The big model makers are turning into suppliers. Their models are showing up inside many other products, and the product you actually touch decides how good the experience is.

That is the same idea behind agentic AI. You should not need to know which model sits behind a task, or which cloud it runs on. You describe what you want done, and a team of agents plans the steps and does the work.

Agentic AI works that way on iPhone and iPad. You get ready-made expert agents running on frontier models, with no account and no login, and you can put up to four of them on one task. It is free to try with 3 tasks.

OpenAI has been busy this week. Two days earlier, it showed its newest models migrating old banking code, which we explain in OpenAI COBOL. Its always-on agents are covered in What are OpenAI Dots?
