What Is Claude Duet? Anthropic’s Proactive AI Agent, Explained
Claude Duet is Anthropic’s proactive AI agent, launched October 21, 2026. What it does, who can join the waitlist, what it costs, and how it compares to Dots and Muse.
Claude Duet is a new AI agent from Anthropic that does not wait for you to type a question. It watches the apps you connect, tells you what needs attention, and offers to do the work. Anthropic announced it on October 21, 2026, and "what is Claude Duet" started showing up in Google searches within hours.
If you saw the headlines and want the short version, this page covers what Duet is, who can use it today, whether it costs extra, how to join the waitlist, and how it stacks up against OpenAI’s Dots and Meta’s Muse.
What is Claude Duet?
Most AI chat apps are reactive. You open them, you ask, they answer. Claude Duet flips that. Anthropic describes it as an agent that reaches out first: it looks at your email, calendar and work tools, and messages you only when something actually needs you.
It lives in its own app, separate from the regular Claude app. Everything happens in one ongoing thread, and you can type or talk to it. Because it carries over the memory, skills and connected apps you already set up in your Claude account, there is very little setup.
Anthropic says it is aimed at professionals and small business owners who have too much to keep track of. Think of it less as a chatbot and more as an assistant who already has a key to the office.
How does Claude Duet work?
Here is a normal day with Duet, based on Anthropic’s launch post:
- Morning brief. A short summary of the important items across your connected apps.
- Check-ins. It looks at your accounts every few hours and pings you only when something needs attention.
- Doing the work. You can hand it tasks like scheduling meetings, building dashboards and forecasts, following up on threads, or prototyping a small web app.
- Its own computer. Duet runs on a virtual machine in the cloud with its own browser, so it keeps working when your phone or laptop is off.
- Connectors. It can use the Claude Marketplace, which Anthropic says has over 6,000 connectors and plugins.
Anthropic also says Duet can buy things through Stripe’s Link with a virtual card and check out with Shop Pay. Signing in to sites through 1Password and a visual Shopify storefront editor are listed as coming soon, not available yet.
Is Claude Duet free?
Not on the free Claude plan. Anthropic says Duet is included in the Pro and Max plans, with no separate price. The catch is usage: Duet shares the same limits as the rest of Claude, and its background check-ins and bigger tasks count against them. A busy Duet means fewer messages left for regular chats.

Anthropic has not given a date for opening Duet to more countries or to free users.
Claude Duet vs Dots vs Muse
Duet is Anthropic’s answer to two always-on agents that arrived a few weeks earlier: Meta’s Muse (September 8) and OpenAI’s Dots (late September). All three run on their own cloud computers and can act for you. The differences are mostly about who they are for and how you pay.
| Claude Duet | OpenAI Dots | Meta Muse | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maker | Anthropic | OpenAI | Meta |
| Launched | Oct 21, 2026 | Sep 29, 2026 | Sep 8, 2026 |
| Main focus | Work tasks for professionals and small businesses | Always-on agent inside paid ChatGPT plans | Personal errands: travel, forms, shopping |
| Price | Included in Claude Pro and Max | Attached to higher paid ChatGPT plans | Free tier, plus $20 and $100 a month plans |
| Access | US waitlist, research preview | Selected markets, not EU or UK at launch | US first |
The short verdict: Muse is the most consumer-friendly and the only one with a free tier. Duet leans hardest into work, and it is the one to watch if you already pay for Claude.
Is Claude Duet safe?
An agent that reads your inbox and can spend money needs guardrails, and Anthropic spent a lot of the announcement on them:
- Before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, Duet shows you the action and waits for your OK.
- Some things are off-limits even with approval, like trading securities or moving money between accounts.
- It never directly sees your passwords or sign-in tokens.
- A new classifier blocks the most sensitive data, like credit card numbers and government IDs. Health and personal finance details are shared only when you tell it to.
- Anthropic says it has defenses against prompt injection (hidden instructions planted in web pages or emails), went through outside penetration testing, and is covered by a public bug bounty.
Anthropic is also upfront about the limits. It says this early version might misread a thread or get wrong what is urgent, it is weaker at personal tasks like booking tickets, and you cannot yet watch its browser while it works.
What this means for you
In about six weeks, Meta, OpenAI and Anthropic have all shipped the same idea: an agent with its own computer that works in the background. That tells you where AI is going. The chat box is turning into a coworker.
For most people, the hard part is not picking which giant’s agent to trust. It is getting real tasks done today without a waitlist, a US-only account or a pricey subscription tier. If you want to see what agentic AI feels like right now, a phone app is the easiest place to start. Our app, Agentic AI, gives you ready-made expert agents, or a team of up to 4 working together, on iPhone and iPad. You get 3 free tasks to try it, no model shopping required.
