What Is ServiceNow Arc? The Nvidia-Backed Work Agent, Explained

ServiceNow Arc is a personal AI agent for work, built with Nvidia and generally available October 21, 2026. What it does, who gets it, and what it costs.

ServiceNow Arc showed up in a lot of headlines today, often next to the word Nvidia. If you only know ServiceNow as the IT ticket system at your office, the news can be confusing. Is Arc a new AI model? A chatbot? Something you can download?

Short version: it is an AI agent that does office work for you, and as of today big companies can switch it on. Here is what it is, how it went from "Project Arc" to plain "Arc," and what it means if you are not a ServiceNow customer.

TL;DR: ServiceNow Arc is a personal AI agent for everyday work. You give it a goal, and it plans, does the steps across tools like email, Microsoft Teams and ServiceNow, checks its work and keeps going until the job is done. It was first shown as "Project Arc" in May 2026 and became generally available on October 21, 2026, for Mac, with Windows due within weeks. It runs inside NVIDIA OpenShell, a locked-down sandbox, and it comes at no extra cost with ServiceNow’s Foundation, Advanced and Prime plans.

What is ServiceNow Arc?

ServiceNow Arc is an AI agent made by ServiceNow, the company whose software many large businesses use to run IT help desks, HR requests and other internal work. Arc is not a new language model. It is the "worker" that sits on top of AI models and actually does tasks.

ServiceNow calls it a personal, long-running agent. In plain words, that means three things:

  • Personal: each employee gets their own Arc, which builds memory and learns skills over time.
  • Long-running: a job can take minutes or days. Arc keeps working until it is finished.
  • Proactive: it can spot work on its own by looking at your backlog, inbox, meetings and conversations.

ServiceNow’s Jon Sigler, who runs its AI Platform, called it "the first personal AI agent built for everyday work and governable by IT." That last part is the real selling point: the company’s IT team sets the rules, and Arc has to follow them.

ServiceNow Project Arc vs Arc: what changed?

If you searched for "ServiceNow Project Arc," you found the earlier name. ServiceNow and Nvidia first announced Project Arc on May 5, 2026, at ServiceNow’s Knowledge 2026 conference in Las Vegas. Back then it was an early preview of an autonomous desktop agent aimed at developers, IT teams and administrators. Today’s launch dropped the "Project" and opened it up.

What does Nvidia have to do with ServiceNow Arc?

Nvidia supplies the safety cage and some of the brainpower.

The cage: every action Arc takes can run inside NVIDIA OpenShell, Nvidia’s open-source sandbox for AI agents. ServiceNow’s control software writes the rules (which systems Arc can touch, which APIs it can call, what data it can read), and OpenShell enforces them while the agent works. Arc can run on its own separate computer inside OpenShell, or on the employee’s own desktop.

The brainpower: ServiceNow says Arc runs everyday tasks on local models using NVIDIA RTX Spark hardware and sends harder jobs to frontier models. ServiceNow says this cuts costs and keeps more data on the device. The announcement does not name which frontier models Arc uses.

The two companies also teased AI Passport: an official record for each AI agent that lists what it is allowed to do. The plan is that IT can revoke one permission, like "write to production systems," and both OpenShell and Nvidia BlueField chips will block it in about one second. That part is not live yet. It is promised for a future release.

Is ServiceNow Arc free?

Only if your employer already pays for ServiceNow. Arc comes inside ServiceNow EmployeeWorks and is included at no additional cost with the Foundation, Advanced and Prime plans. There is no public price list for those plans, and there is no way for an individual to sign up for Arc on their own. If your company uses ServiceNow, ask your IT team whether they plan to turn it on.

How do you get ServiceNow Arc?

  1. Your company needs a ServiceNow plan that includes EmployeeWorks (Foundation, Advanced or Prime).
  2. Your IT team enables Arc and sets its rules in the Control Tower.
  3. You use it on a Mac today. Windows users wait a few more weeks, according to ServiceNow.

There is no iPhone app for Arc in the announcement.

Do not mix it up with these other "Arcs"

Search results get messy here. Azure Arc is a Microsoft tool for managing servers, and some ServiceNow setups connect to it, but it is a different product. Arc is also the name of a web browser from The Browser Company. And "ServiceNow ArchX" is a certification program, not an agent. If the page talks about a personal AI agent, Nvidia and OpenShell, it is the one in this post.

What this means for you

Arc is another sign that 2026 is the year agents moved from demos into real offices. The pattern is the same everywhere: give the agent a goal, let it work for a long time, and wrap strong rules around it. Nvidia announced the security side of that today too, and last week Proof launched the x401 protocol to prove who an agent works for.

The catch is that Arc lives behind an enterprise contract. Freelancers, students and small teams cannot get it. If you want an agent that plans, researches and writes for you right now, a ready-made app is the faster path. Agentic AI puts a team of up to four expert agents on your iPhone. You describe the task, they split the work, check each other, and hand back a finished result. No IT department required.
