Walmart AI Agents: Agent Gateway and Agent Profiles, Explained

Walmart AI agents can now shop for you through Agent Gateway, with Agent Profiles and spending limits like $50 or $100. What changed, what is safe, and when.

Walmart just told AI agents they are welcome to shop in its store. On October 21, 2026, the company announced a way for assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Meta’s Muse to search Walmart and buy things for you, with rules about what those agents can and cannot touch.

If you saw the headline and wondered what a "Walmart AI agent" actually is, whether it can spend your money, and how this differs from Amazon, here is the plain version.

TL;DR: Walmart announced three things on October 21, 2026: the Walmart Agent Gateway, a direct connection that lets approved AI agents search and buy at Walmart; Agent Profiles, which give each AI agent its own slot in your Walmart account with a spending limit (Walmart’s examples: $50, $100 or $200) or approval for every order; and new terms that block agents from your card details. The Gateway starts as a beta for companies and developers, and Agent Profiles arrive within about a month.

What are Walmart AI agents?

"Walmart AI agents" can mean two things, and both are now real:

  • Outside agents that shop at Walmart for you. These are assistants from other companies, like ChatGPT, Gemini or Muse. You tell one "reorder my usual groceries," and it places the order at Walmart.
  • Walmart’s own assistant, Sparky. Sparky is the shopping helper inside the Walmart app. Retail Dive notes it launched in 2025, and Walmart named it again in this announcement.

The news this week is about the first kind. Until now, an outside agent shopped by signing in as you and clicking around the website. Walmart says that was slow and error-prone, and it meant the store could not tell your orders apart from the agent’s. The new tools fix both problems.

What is the Walmart Agent Gateway?

The Agent Gateway is a direct line between an AI agent and Walmart’s systems. Instead of loading web pages, an approved agent asks Walmart for products and places orders through a clean connection. TechCrunch describes it as an MCP server. MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that lets AI tools plug into outside services. Anthropic created it, and it is now used across the industry. (Short version in our agentic AI glossary.)

A few details matter:

  • It starts as a beta for companies and developers, with details at walmart.com/agents. You do not switch it on yourself; your AI app has to support it.
  • Walmart says an agent can help you reorder your usual items, like your regular bread or milk brand, without Walmart handing your full purchase history to the agent.
  • Walmart says agents see the same prices a person sees on Walmart.com, with offers and fees shown before checkout. In its words, "We price products, not people."

How do Walmart Agent Profiles and spending limits work?

Agent Profiles are the part shoppers will actually see. Walmart compares them to adding an authorized user to a credit card: the agent can buy, but its purchases are labeled and you set the limits.

QuestionWhat Walmart says
How is a profile created?Automatically, the first time you use an agent to shop through the Agent Gateway. You link it by signing in to your Walmart account.
Can I cap spending?Yes. Approve every purchase, or let the agent buy within a limit. Examples given: $50, $100, $200.
Are agent orders separate?Yes. Each agent’s purchases show apart from your own orders.
Can I turn it off?Yes. Change permissions or delete an Agent Profile at any time.
Does the agent see my card? No. Agents never receive payment card details and cannot add or change payment methods.
Do I need Walmart+?No, according to TechCrunch. Any Walmart account holder can use it.
When?Agent Profiles launch "within the next month," so around November 2026.

Is it safe to let an AI agent shop at Walmart?

Walmart’s new terms for agents are stricter than most people expect. By default you must approve each purchase. Walmart can ask for extra approval even inside a spending limit. Agents may only see the information the task needs and you allow. They must not act beyond what you asked. Agents that break the rules get blocked from the site.

Walmart also says its normal returns process applies, including when an agent does not do what you intended. That is the right promise, because agents still make mistakes. A model can misread "the big one" and order a 48-pack.

Two habits help. Start with "approve every purchase" until you trust the agent. Then, if you switch to a limit, keep it low, like Walmart’s $50 example. This is the same rule of thumb we gave for 1Password for Agents, which handles the sign-in side of the same problem: let the agent do the legwork, keep the money decision with you.

Walmart vs Amazon on AI agents

The timing is pointed. TechCrunch reports that Amazon has started blocking AI agents from buying on behalf of shoppers, and Retail Dive notes Amazon has tried to stop agents from Perplexity and Meta. Walmart went the other way: it built a front door and wrote house rules.

Walmart CEO John Furner discussed the move at the Masters of Scale Summit in San Francisco, according to TechCrunch. The bet is simple: if people start shopping through AI assistants, the store that works with those assistants gets the orders.

What this means for you

Most of us will not change anything this week. The Gateway is a developer beta, and Agent Profiles are still a few weeks out. But the direction is clear. Big stores are now writing rules for AI agents, with spending caps and approval steps, the same way banks wrote rules for online payments.

The useful part today is the thinking that happens before the cart: what to cook, what to buy, what fits the budget, what to compare. That is where an agent team helps right now. Our app, Agentic AI, gives you ready-made expert agents on iPhone and iPad. Ask the Life Planner to plan five dinners under a set budget, and the Research Analyst to compare two products. You can put up to 4 agents on one task. It does not log in to Walmart or buy anything for you, so the final click stays yours. There is no account to create, and you get 3 free tasks to try it.
